What feeling is more terrifying than wondering if you're doing all you can to keep your kids safe, even in your own home? Today, we'll help put those fears at ease with tips from an expert.
Safety is key in a home with a child, and no one knows it better than TikTok's favorite Emergency Pediatric nurse, Nurse A. Based on her experience in emergency medicine, she's giving us her top 5 safety steps she takes in her own home to keep her family protected. Be sure to share this list with the mom's in your life!
While most new homes are supplied with cordless blinds, not every home comes with them. If long enough, they can be a potential choking hazard for small children. If you don't already have cordless blinds, Nurse A recommends cutting them shorter or tying them up well out of reach of the little ones.
Small but incredibly dangerous, Nurse A keeps her button batteries and others in a locked safe. They can be easily ingested, and found in unsuspecting places like automatic children's toothbrushes and singing birthday cards. Make sure your children are monitored at all times when playing with any toy with button batteries.
It might seem difficult to move a full dresser, but due to their height they can easily be tipped over if a child climbed on top of one. Nurse A recommends attaching any dressers in the home to a wall with a hook, strap or L-bracket so they'll stay put for the little climbers in your home. It's a very inexpensive and easy DIY project that could help prevent tragedy.
Even though many medications come with child-proof safety tops, Nurse A says that's not enough to risk leaving them within reach. She keeps hers in the highest shelf of the master closet, and even vitamins are kept in the shelf of her kitchen.
Nurse A cuts all tomatoes, grapes and hotdogs for her kids before serving them. The most common cause of choking in young children is food. Always cut round food in half or quarters if needed, and hot dogs slice down the middle, then cut into easy-to-chew pieces.
