Ah, Spring… the weather is warming, the world is getting greener, and the feeling of newness is in the air. But it’s also the season of traditions, both long-held and just begun.
There are many reasons to celebrate Easter, but one of our favorites is the nostalgia we get from traditions we enjoyed as kids. Whether you’ve got generations of heritage to observe the holiday, or you’re celebrating your first this year, we’ve put together a list of our favorite Easter traditions that you can do with the whole family!
DYEING EGGS
It’s believed that this classic craft started with early Christians to celebrate the end of the Lenten season. The tradition is still alive and well today, with many fantastic ways to make those eggs stand out from the coop - I mean crowd. One way to easily decorate them is called “masking”, where you put a sticker, rubber band, leaf or tape onto the egg before dyeing. When you remove your mask, it will leave a beautiful outline of whatever shape you chose. Sounds egg-cellent!
HOT CROSS BUNS
Another well-aged tradition is baking, and the folklore takes us back to the 12th century. According to legend, an Anglican monk baked the buns, then marked them with a cross in honor of Good Friday. Eventually, they gained popularity and became a symbol of Easter weekend. And why not - they’re delicious! The trick is to let the dough rise overnight in the fridge for the lightest, fluffiest buns. Or, you can follow this simple traditional recipe.
MONEY BUNNY
Observances of old really can be appreciated these days! The Easter basket idea was initially said to be done at the end of Lent, where medieval Catholics would bring baskets full of goodies to the priests for a blessing. Today, many families bless each other with monetary gifts. Aside from popping that sweet $10 bill in the plastic egg and hiding it in the yard, you can also slide one in a PEZ dispenser (do they even still make those??), hide it in a jar of candy with a toilet paper roll, or even inside balloons! And fun fact: headbands fit perfectly inside those plastic eggs... just sayin'.
EASTER GARDEN
Planting an Easter garden is the perfect way to get the kids involved in an easy craft that the whole family can enjoy, and even make into an heirloom! Easter Gardens are a fairly new idea, based on a very old story - using a wide pot, you create a miniature picture of the Resurrection story, complete with a mound of grass, a few crosses from sticks and a larger stone, laid aside to reveal an empty smaller pot representing the tomb. And you know what else is awesome? You probably already have most of the items you need! Follow this easy tutorial to make your own at home.
