6 Ways to Style Your Hair with a Headband

6 Ways to Style Your Hair with a Headband

5 minute read

You've worn the hair-up-in-the-ponytail with the classic headband style time and again. The old reliable standby. But are you ready to freshen up your look?

In today's post, we're giving you our 6 favorite ways to style your hair with a headband that are easy, adorable, and one more way your Lilac Market Headband can show YOU off!

Hair Down

If you're having an awesome hair day, you definitely don't want to cover it up. You want to accentuate it with an accessory!

  1. First, slip your headband on so it's hanging down around your neck, and position the knot where you'll want it.
  2. Separate the desired amount of hair that you'll want in front of the headband (the hair that frames your face) from the hair in the back. Tie or clip the rest of the hair back to keep it separate from the front.
  3. Bring the band over the front hair and put it on behind the front hair.
  4. Make sure the band is touching the skin behind the ears and no hair has gotten in between - this will help hold your headband in place.
  5. Adjust as desired, then let your back hair down and fluff for volume.
  6. Pro tip: the narrower the width of the band, the better it will stay in place. You can do this by "bunching" or ruching the headband by pulling little sections of the top layer of the headband until it creates a gathered look.

Messy Bun

This style is perfect for casual coolness, especially on no-wash days (dry shampoo, anyone?).

  1. Rather than brushing it out first, flip your head over and finger-comb your tresses upside down to give it some volume to maintain its natural texture.
  2. Gather your hair into a ponytail where you'd like the bun to sit.
  3. Holding your tie ready with one hand, use the other hand to scrunch pieces of the ponytail into itself and gather it up into a bun as you go.
  4. Tie off with an elastic, but make sure the placement of your elastic isn't perfect, so it will give your bun a misshapen look. If any pieces fall out, tuck them under the elastic or pin back into the bun with a bobby pin.
  5. Snug the bun down in little bits to create more volume with your hair. Put on your fave headband, and you're ready to play!

Twisted Braid

We love a good braid with a little twist. This hairstyle needs a Lilac Market Headband to work, so grab your band and let's go!

  1. Using the same initial step as the first hairstyle above, start by putting the band around your neck and separating the front strands of hair just behind your hairline.
  2. Once separated, put the band on over the front hair and place the band about an inch behind your hairline and behind your ears (make sure it's touching skin and not hair!).
  3. Doing one side at a time, take the hair in front of the band into one strand. Lift the headband just above your ear and loop the hair around the headband twice. The strand should now be under the band with the end below the ear and fall naturally into the rest of your hair in the back.
  4. Braid the remaining hair behind your head like normal. For added sass, flip the braid over one shoulder.

Half-Up

Perfect day to night look, this half-up style gives you the best of both worlds.

  1. Using a butterfly clip or elastic, pull the hair from just behind the ears up to the back crown of your up.
  2. Clip it, or make a little bun with it.
  3. Don't pull the top half of hair back too tight, and keep the back half of your hair down.
  4. Put on your Lilac Market Headband and choose your favorite way to wear: knot in front, to the side, or to the back!

Over the Hair

This boho look is all the rage, and is super adorbs for both long and short hair. If you want a trendy style, this might be the easiest one to recreate.

  1. Place the knot on the top of your head, just behind the hairline.
  2. Taking the back part, gently pull onto your head toward your neck until it feels snug and secure.
  3. For a more snug fit, bring down just over the tops of the ears as well.
  4. Keep in mind, if your headband is touching skin, it will help this style to stay put.

Low and Loopty

This style may be one of our favorites, and looks like you spent hours when it takes just a few minutes!

  1. Tie off your hair into 3 equal low ponytails.
  2. On the right and left tails, loosen the tail enough to make a small hole just above the elastic, and flip the tail end through to create a little twist.
  3. Take the center ponytail and pull whole tail from under the left side twist.
  4. Then take the two just-completed strands and pull both tails under and through the right side twist.
  5. Adjust the hair around the elastics to hide them, and pull the tail end slightly to add volume and security.
  6. Throw on your favorite Lilac Market Headband, and you've got a style that won't quit, just like our headbands!
